The History of The Big Event

Joann had a vision in 1995, on her 10th anniversary of being treated successfully at the Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center for breast cancer. She wanted to do something to try to "give back" for having her life spared through diligent care by her doctors at Duke. So, leaning on her friends and business associates, she raised over $115,000 by asking them to sponsor her on a one woman bike ride from Greensboro to the Duke campus in Durham – 50 miles! For the following 13 years, many riders, runners and walkers have joined her and raised a cumulative total of $4 million for cancer research.

Now, as a 22 year survivor, she continues to be motivated to help people with all types of cancer.  Understanding that nearly every family has been touched by cancer, Joann and countless volunteers are working toward that day when cancer will become a manageable disease and not the killer so many people fear.

With commitment, dedication and passion on the part of researchers, volunteers and generous donors, one day this disease will no longer take the lives of our loved ones.

We look forward to "Celebrating Life" and "Honoring a Loved One" with you at the "Big Event."
